I didn't expect much from the camera on my Nexus 7.
I mean why even bother if all your are going to implement is a 1.3 megapixel camera? However, even I didn't think the photos were going to be almost illegible.
Anyone have any tips and/or suggestions to "optimize" the camera?

There's not much you can do with such a limited amount of megapixels. Try an environment with brighter lighting when using the front-facing camera. Usually, more light equals better quality on so-so cameras.
There's a hack you can do to get the video cam to record in 720p. Not sure if thats of any use to you, but its WAY better than the crappy VGA quality it come stock with. It's a simple tweak if you're interested.
